The reason for the confusion is because Mohammed's genealogy is a fiction that was created in the 8th century by Ibn Ishak. If this comes as a surprise to you simply count the generations. Are we to believe an average Arabian generation 66 years long? Especially with Mohammed himself having done a 9 year old?

It's utterly preposterous to suggest that someone could have, in the 7th century AD Arabian desert, traced their genealogy back a couple thousand years. The confusion in Islamic scholars today is the same as it was back when other liars tried it according to Amru bin al-As:

'Mohammed genealogized himself regarding his ancestors until he reached al-Nather bin Kinaneh, then he said 'anyone who claimed otherwise or added further ancestors, has lied.'"
