Repeatedly in conversation with anti-Zionists, it seems the best they are reduced to being able to offer, is to carp on repeatedly about Israeli use of white phosphorous. Well that, and trotting out the ole' U.S.S Liberty incident. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Liberty_incident

I wonder how far into the last decade of unguided random rocket attacks on Israel from Gaza - as capable of hitting a school or hospital as anything else - these anti-zionists would have made it if rockets were landing in their U.S. towns and around their kid's schools, without whining to their government to do something about it?

Since the rockets that are lobbed into Israel from Gaza originate from neighborhoods in civilian areas, and so-called "Palestinians" hide among their women and children to maximize civilian casualties for propaganda purposes, I was wondering if this tool was used to reduce collateral damage. So I googled the subject and found it is used to create a smokescreen:

US general defends phosphorus use
White phosphorous being used over Falluja
White phosphorous being used over Falluja
The United States' most senior general has defended the use of weapons containing white phosphorus in Iraq.

General Peter Pace said that such munitions were a "legitimate tool of the military", used to illuminate targets and create smokescreens.

Two weeks ago, the US admitted using it to flush out insurgents in Falluja last year - raising concerns that it might have hit civilians.

Initially, the military denied using it against either insurgents or civilians.

Correspondents said having had to retract its original denial was a public relations disaster for the US.

'Within the law'

Gen Pace said no military went to greater lengths to avoid civilian casualties than the US army.

He said white phosphorus, a chemical that burns on exposure to oxygen, producing a bright light and lots of white smoke, was used primarily to illuminate a battlefield or to hide troop movements.

WHITE PHOSPHORUS
Spontaneously flammable chemical used for battlefield illumination
Contact with particles causes burning of skin and flesh
Use of incendiary weapons prohibited for attacking civilians (Protocol III of Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons)
Protocol III not signed by US

"It is not a chemical weapon. It is an incendiary. And it is well within the law of war to use those weapons as they're being used, for marking and for screening," he said.

If it comes into contact with human skin, white phosphorus can ignite and burn down to the bone if it is not exhausted or extinguished.

An Italian TV channel has reported that the US used white phosphorus against civilians in Falluja, and showed pictures of burned bodies.

The US has denied this.

"A bullet goes through skin even faster than white phosphorus does," Gen Pace said.

"So I would rather have the proper instrument applied at the proper time, as precisely as possible, to get the job done, in a way that kills as many of the bad guys as possible and does as little collateral damage as possible.

"That is just the nature of warfare."

"Israelis Use of White Phosphorous Airburst Smoke Screening in Gaza

Accrding to IHS Jane’s Weapons Technology Analyst commenting on the discussions surrounding the Israeli use of white phosherous agents in Gaza,  “The round so far specified as being fired are the M825A1 which is purely an air-burst white phosherous smoke projectile." the analyst said. 'It’s construction and function is highly elaborate and I would say deliberately so to make it inappropriate for anti-personnel use'. M825A1 shell is not defined as an incendiary weapon by the Third Protocol to the Convention on Conventional Weapons because its principal use is to produce smoke to protect troops. White Phosphorous weapons banned by theprotocol are ground or low level burst weapons designed primarily for anti-personnel use. The primary function of the M825A1 is for the rapid creation of a highly effective, but short lived visible and infrared smoke screen."

Security and Defense: Coming out of its white phosphorous shell

Why did the IDF wait so long, and leave the international arena open to the Hamas narrative?

In the middle of Operation Cast Lead, Deputy Chief of General Staff Maj.-Gen. Dan Harel drove to Sde Dov Airport in Tel Aviv and boarded a Beechcraft Kingair B200, called "Zufit" by the IAF. The Zufit is a reconnaissance aircraft equipped with a specially designed camera system that allows it to take pictures from a standoff position. This means that it can remain within Israeli airspace, but track and take pictures of targets on the other side of a border. The plane flew south, and began focusing its camera on a force from the 101st Battalion of the Paratroop Brigade operating in northern Gaza. The force, which was positioned on the second floor of an apartment building, was coming under heavy fire. At one point, Hamas terrorists fired an RPG through the second floor window. In the Zufit, Harel could hear the communication between the force and the battalion commander. Three soldiers were wounded, one seriously, and the battalion commander needed to call for a ground evacuation. Two armored personnel carriers and one tank came rumbling down the tight alleyway. Shortly afterward, an artillery battery deployed outside Gaza let loose a number of 155 mm. white phosphorous shells that exploded in midair and created smoke cover for troops on the ground. The IDF came under harsh criticism for using these smoke-screen shells. Human Rights Watch, for example, deployed weapons experts to the Gaza border to watch the midair explosions. HRW executive director Kenneth Roth later accused Israel of violating "the legal requirement to take all feasible precautions during military operations to avoid harming civilians." The shells, he said, "never should have been deployed." Harel, as well as the rest of the IDF top brass involved in investigating the use of white phosphorous during the 22-day offensive, believe that the shells should have been deployed and plan to deploy them again in a future conflict, should one erupt. One top officer, who met several times with a team of foreign military officers, said that Canadian and American generals who came to Israel to investigate the damage caused to UN facilities during the operation were surprised when they were shown that the white phosphorous shell was actually American made and NATO approved.

I am still unable to find a count as to how many people were killed in Gaza by white phosphorous while even browsing "Palestinian" propaganda sites.
