Why did Jesus fold the napkin?
« on: April 12, 2010, 01:31:51 PM »
This is something a friend of mine shared with me at work one day. I thought it was fascinating and so I want to share it with all of you.

Why did Jesus fold the linen burial cloth after His resurrection?

Why did Jesus fold the linen burial cloth after His resurrection?

The Gospel of John (20: 7) tells us that the napkin, which was placed over the face of Jesus, was not just thrown aside like the grave clothes. The Bible takes an entire verse to tell us that the napkin was neatly folded, and was placed at the head of that stony coffin.

Is that important? You'd better believe it! Is that significant? Absolutely! Is it really significant? Yes!

In order to understand the significance of the folded napkin, you have to understand a little bit about Hebrew tradition of that day. The folded napkin had to do w/ the Master and Servant, and every Jewish boy knew this tradition. When the servant set the dinner table for the master, he made sure that it was exactly the way the master wanted it. The table was furnished perfectly, and then the servant would wait, just out of sight, until the master had finished eating, and the servant would not dare touch that table, until the master was finished.

Now if the master had finished eating, he would rise from the table, wipe his fingers, his mouth, and clean his beard, and would wad up that napkin and toss it onto the table. The servant would then know to clear the table. For in those days, the wadded napkin meant, "I'm done".

But if the master got up from the table, and folded his napkin, and laid it beside his plate, the servant would not dare touch the table, because the servant knew that the folded napkin meant, "I'm not finished yet." The folded napkin meant, "I'm coming back!"

John 20:7 (New King James Version)..... and the handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself.
Doth that man love his Lord who would be willing to see Jesus wearing a crown of thorns, while for himself he craves a chaplet of laurel? Shall Jesus ascend to his throne by the cross, and do we expect to be carried there on the shoulders of applauding crowds? Charles H. Spurgeon

It still never amazes how the littliest thing can mean so much more. I never saw that before from those actions and what it meant, I keep hearing these little things from the bible that dont mean much when you read them but when someone else gives a different slant to it, it opens your eyes so much more....thanks for sharing.

I really like that. "I'm not finished yet."

What a great post. Thanks very much.

No problem. Though the original post is one that I heard from someone else at work. I prefer the phrase, "I'm coming back" so as not to conflict with the perfect work Jesus did finish. I believe I would have worded it differently.

I have been having a thing about this at various times throughout the day, and have come to a conclusion.

As you know, some argue that Jesus is not risen. That he is dead. Some say the apostles broke in and stole the body.

But would anyone have thought of actually folding the napkin? That is so neat, it's brilliant.

The most damning evidence brought against that detestable lie is the fact that these men died for their belief. If it had been a lie they would have said so to prevent their demise. Muhammad certainly wasn't prepared to die for his beliefs.

What! And you're not kidding!
He would have lined everyone else up to save him first!

John 20:7 (John Gill's commentary)

And the napkin that was about his head

The word (soudarion) , rendered "napkin", is thought to be originally Latin, and signifies an handkerchief, with which the sweat is wiped off the face, and so it is used in ( Acts 19:12 ) but Nonnus says it is a common word with the Syrians, and the word (ardwo) is used in the Syriac version; and which he renders, (kefalhv zwsthra) , "the girdle, or binding of the head", for with this the head and face of the dead person were bound; see ( John 11:44 ) . Now Peter, by going into the sepulchre, and looking about him, and examining things more strictly and narrowly, observed that which neither he nor John had taken notice of, when only stooping they looked in: and that is, that this head binder, or napkin,

was not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself:

and was plainly the effect of thought, care, and composure; and clearly showed, that the body was not taken away in a hurry, or by thieves, since everything lay in such order and decency; and which was done, either by our Lord himself, or by the angels.

The most damning evidence brought against that detestable lie is the fact that these men died for their belief. If it had been a lie they would have said so to prevent their demise. Muhammad certainly wasn't prepared to die for his beliefs.

Jesus calls His disciples to live for their beliefs, not to strap bombs and guns to themselves and kill others for their beliefs.

All of Jesus' disciples remained faithfull to the very end, never denying faith in their Lord.  For this, all but one, John, died as martyrs for their faith at the hands of others, but not by killing others in defense of their faith.

There are accounts where they tried to boil John to death in a large pot of oil, to no avail!
