In order to understand Jihad one must cut through the fog of dissimulation, of western largely heterodox Muslims in Muslim-minority countries, and go straight to the books that inspire Orthodox Muslim scholars in the cradle of the religion, like the Islamic scholar that is at the head of The Islamic State.
It should be apparent to even a child, that the ultimate arbiters of Islamic jurisprudence and Sharia law, would obviously be those most willing to employ the beheading knife. As in the example of those at Islam's largest and most prestigious Al-Azhar University.

Al-Jihad (the holy fighting) in Allah's Cause (with full force of number and weaponry) is given the utmost importance in Islam and is one of its pillars (on which it stands).
By Jihad Islam is established, Allah's Word is made superior, [His Word being La ilaha ill-Allah
(which means: none has the right to be worshipped but Allah)] and His Religion (Islam) is propagated. By abandoning Jihad (may Allah protect us from that) Islam is destroyed and the Muslims fall into an inferior position; there honour is lost, their lands are stolen, their rule and authority vanish.
Jihad is an obligatory duty in Islam on every Muslim, and he who tries to escape from this duty, or does not in his innermost heart wish to fulfill this duty,

Quran Surah 8:12
I will instill terror into the hearts of the unbelievers: smite ye above their necks and smite all their finger-tips off them
The following verse is from chapter 9, which is second from last in order or "revelation", so any earlier Mecca drivel like "no compulsion in religion", is
abrogated and "replaced" by Muhammad's later Medina suras that call for violence against non-Muslims such as this one:
Quran Surah 9.111
Allah hath purchased of the believers their persons and their goods; for theirs (in return) is the garden (of Paradise):
they fight in His cause, and slay and are slain:
a promise binding on Him in truth, through the Law, the Gospel, and
the Qur'an: and who is more faithful to his covenant than Allah. then rejoice in the bargain which ye have concluded: that is the achievement supreme.
Bukhari, V1 B2 #24 Narrated Ibn 'Umar: Allah's Apostle said: "
I have been ordered (by Allah) to fight against the people until they testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is Allah's Apostle, and offer the prayers perfectly and give the obligatory charity, so if they perform a that, then they save their lives an property from me except for Islamic laws and then their reckoning (accounts) will be done by Allah."
Quran Surah 9.29
Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth,
(even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and
feel themselves subdued. 30 The
Jews call 'Uzair a son of Allah, and the
Christians call Christ the son of Allah. That is a saying from their mouth; (in this) they but imitate what the unbelievers of old used to say.
Allah's curse be on them: how they are deluded away from the Truth!Bukhari B59 #459 Narrated Ibn Muhairiz:
I entered the Mosque and saw Abu Said Al-Khudri and
sat beside him and asked him about Al-Azl (i.e.
coitus interruptus).
Abu Said said, "We went out with Allah's Apostle for the Ghazwa of Banu Al-Mustaliq and we received captives from among the Arab captives and
we desired women and celibacy became hard on us
and we loved to do coitus interruptus......"
Al-Baqara, Chapter #2, Verse #216
fighting is prescribed for you, and ye dislike it. But it is possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you, and that ye love a thing which is bad for you. But Allah knoweth, and ye know not.
Qur'an 33:26 "
Allah took down the People of the Scripture Book. He cast terror into their hearts. Some you slew, and some you made prisoners. And He made you heirs of their lands, their houses, and their goods, giving you a land which you had not traversed before. And Allah has power over all things."

If that sounds different than what some heterodox Muslims are saying in western minority Muslim countries there is good reason for it.

“Speaking is a means to achieve objectives. If a praiseworthy aim is attainable through both telling the truth and lying, it is unlawful to accomplish it through lying because there is no need for it. When it is possible to achieve such an aim by lying but not by telling the truth, it is permissible to lie if attaining the goal is permissible..., and obligatory to lie if the goal is obligatory. ...One should compare the bad consequences entailed by lying to those entailed by telling the truth, and if the consequences of telling the truth are more damaging, one is entitled to lie…â€
An example of an "obligatory" "goal": "Da'wah is recognized by the majority of scholars as being obligatory upon every Muslim."
Da'wah is proselytizing for the Islamic faith, so when it is not possible to achieve this goal by telling the truth in an interfaith dialogue, Muslims are under obligation to lie while proselytizing. An example of this could be to claim there is a history of Mecca prior to the 4th century AD, even when the person proselytizing knows there is not.
It isn't unusual for Muhammad's followers to pretend friendship with non-Muslims toward the objective of "da'wah", however genuine friendship is prohibited, outside the context of deception. So much so that the Quran informs Muhammad's followers that if they make friends with Christians or Jews they become OF us:
Surah 5:51
O ye who believe! take not the Jews and the Christians for your friends and protectors: They are but friends and protectors to each other. And
he amongst you that turns to them (for friendship) is of them. Verily Allah guideth not a people unjust.
Not much can be worse than for a follower of Muhammad to be OF Christians since they must presume that each and every Christian throughout a period of nearly 2,000 years, has lived and died in a state of committing Muhammad's only
unforgivable sin of "shirk", for praying in Jesus' name.
