Another perspective for "that man of sin"
« on: May 12, 2011, 10:34:18 AM »
Among the many topics that come to the forefront of eschatological discussions 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 is a common focus of discussion. This verse is often proof-texted as "evidence" for a coming "antichrist". But as has been pointed out on this forum many times a careful look at that passage will yield some surprising insights.

2Th 2:3    Let no man deceive you by any means: for [that day shall not come], except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

2Th 2:4    Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

The NT is adamant about where the temple of God is.

1Cr 3:16    Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and [that] the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

1Cr 3:17    If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which [temple] ye are.

2Cr 6:16    And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in [them]; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

Where should we then begin to look for "that man of sin"?

I understand that there are many other sins in the Temple of God but this is perhaps the most pervasive in the West. It wasn't like we weren't warned. Scroll to 3:11 minute mark

Stunning stuff. God bless
Doth that man love his Lord who would be willing to see Jesus wearing a crown of thorns, while for himself he craves a chaplet of laurel? Shall Jesus ascend to his throne by the cross, and do we expect to be carried there on the shoulders of applauding crowds? Charles H. Spurgeon

When I read the link you posted,(http://articles.latimes.com/2011/may/11/local/la-me-0511-presbyterians-2-20110511) it brought to mind the following,
Rom 1:24  Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonor their own bodies between themselves:
Rom 1:25  Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshiped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
Rom 1:26  For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
Rom 1:27  And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet.

With what we see happening in the churches today could this be part of the "falling away" we read about in 2 Thessalonians 2:3?
Could the "man of sin" be sitting amongst the body of believers and not in some future temple as is taught today?
Even though this verse is as you said "proof-texted as evidence for a coming antichrist" as taught by many demoninations. It is not in harmony with what God's Word says about the antichrist.
1Jn 2:22  Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.
and
1Jn 4:3  And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

Is this possibly the lie we are told about in scripture, the evidence of a coming antichrist taught today?
2Th 2:11  And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

Just a thought.

Hi 1christianwarrior and welcome to the forum! :)
I posted a few links to these subjects.

I think there's little question, and for the last 60 years or so.

Could the "man of sin" be sitting amongst the body of believers and not in some future temple as is taught today?
