Islam is second-most practiced religion in the Republic of India after Hinduism, with more than 13.4% of the country's population (over 138 million as per 2001 census and 160.9 million per 2009 estimate) identifying themselves as Muslims.

India's Muslim population is the world's third largest[4] and the world's largest Muslim-minority population. Most of the Muslim population is of local origin with undetectable or minor to obvious levels of gene flow from outside, primarily from Iran and Central Asia, rather than directly from the Arabian Peninsula. Matters of jurisdiction involving Muslims in India related to marriage, inheritance and wakf properties are governed by the Muslim Personal Law, and the courts have ruled that Sharia or Muslim law, holds precedence for Muslims over Indian civil law.

It is common for sharia law to begin once the minority population of muslims are large enough. In fact even in countries such as France and England sharia law is being used in their judicial systems for certain communities. It may seem like a small request for them to be governed by their own laws but it stands in direct conflict with the notion of equality. The problem is in the US political correctness has a strangle hold on the policy makers and so we are beginning to see the start of sharia creep in Dearborn, Michigan. The fact is muslims are dedicated to Islam first and the country they live in second. While this same dedication can be seen with Christians in regards to Jesus nothing in the Bible indicates that we are to force our lifestyle on anyone, least of all through government. Jesus told us render to Ceasar what is Ceasar's and render to God what is God's. Christian's understand that Jesus' kingdom is not of this world and so they should have no problem coexisting peacefully with non-believers, but there is no such principle present in Islam. Any verses muslims might point to to argue peaceful coexistence fails under the light of scrutiny given that Muhammad long since declared such verses abrogated and effectively non-binding.

They've codified sharia law into the English courts too.
It's a shame the Indians allow the barbarism, oppression, lopsidedness, and extinction of basic human rights of Islamic sharia law, rather than simply outlawing sharia law altogether.
But hey, India has never been recognized as a bastion of human rights either, and oppression of women is something the two religions have in common.
