I can relate a little because I had to overcome a doctrine myself. Churches all agree on our core doctrines like saved by the blood of our Lord and Savior, the Son of God, the Messiah, Jesus Christ (except for a few cults).
However the most popular end-time doctrine in the western church is the 7-year tribulation doctrine. I was initially interested in this through a TV preacher and studied and followed it for a dozen or so years. I had no reason to doubt it as I thought it was the end-time doctrine of the whole church. Then I started writing about it and studying it a little deeper and the more I did, the more questions I had than answers. Eventually I learned that it was penned by one guy named John Darby. In the 2nd and 3rd chapter of Revelation John talks about the condition of several churches, and their faults. He keeps saying "blessed is he that overcommeth". This isn't about overcoming satan as much as it is about overcoming unsound church doctrine. And overcoming satan as he is the author of all unsound doctrine. While Christians may agree on parts of our doctrine satan doesn't drive us to murder each other over it like Sunnis and Shiites do.
