Deity of Christ
« on: August 02, 2008, 02:40:42 PM »
I was recently blessed by the following.

Jhn 4:23  But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. 24 God [is] a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship [him] in spirit and in truth. 25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. 26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am [he]. 27 And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?

(Greek/English Interlinear (tr) NT) John 4:26  legei  <3004> (5719) {SAYS}  auth  <846>  o  <3588> {TO HER}  ihsouV  <2424> {JESUS,}  egw  <1473> {I}  eimi  <1510> (5748) {AM [HE],}  o  <3588> {WHO}  lalwn  <2980> (5723) {AM SPEAKING}  soi  <4671> {TO THEE.}

Without the bracketed helper word "[HE]", that doesn't occur in the Greek text:

"SAYS TO HER JESUS, I AM WHO AM SPEAKING TO THEE."

Would seem clear from the context of John chapter 4 that it is meant:

Exd 3:13 And Moses said unto God, Behold, [when] I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What [is] his name? what shall I say unto them? 14  And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.

Similar to the use in:

Jhn 8:58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

(Greek/English Interlinear (tr) NT) John 8:58  eipen  <2036> (5627) {SAID}  autoiV  <846>  o  <3588> {TO THEM}  ihsouV  <2424> {JESUS,}  amhn  <281> {VERILY}  amhn  <281> {VERILY}  legw  <3004> (5719) {I SAY}  umin  <5213> {TO YOU,}  prin  <4250> {BEFORE}  abraam  <11> {ABRAHAM}  genesqai  <1096> (5635) {WAS}  egw  <1473> {I}  eimi  <1510> (5748) {AM.}

TO THEM JESUS, VERILY VERILY I SAY TO YOU, BEFORE ABRAHAM WAS I AM.

John 19:7 The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself THE SON OF GOD.

Mat 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, ALL POWER IS GIVEN UNTO ME IN HEAVEN AND IN EARTH. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

Matt 4:5  Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple,    6 and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: 'He shall give His angels charge over you,' and, 'In [their] hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.' "    7  Jesus said to him, "It is written again, 'You shall not tempt the LORD your God.' "    8  Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.    9  And he said to Him, "All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me."    10 Then Jesus said to him, "Away with you, Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.' "

Again, the bracketed [he] is, unfortunately, added by the translators.

(KJV) John 18:1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples.    2  And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples.    3  Judas then, having received a band [of men] and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.    4  Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?    5  They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am [he]. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.    6  As soon then as he had said unto them, I am [he], they went backward, and fell to the ground.    7  Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.    8  Jesus answered, I have told you that I am [he]: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way:    9  That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none.

Look at what happened as soon as Jesus repeated "I AM"!

The term translated as "band" is perhaps a bit of an understatement. Could be they weren't taking any chances when they came to arrest Jesus.

a band
New Testament Greek Definition:
4686 speira {spi'-rah}
of immed. Latin origin, but ultimately a derivative of 138 in the
sense of its cognate 1507;; n f
AV - band 7; 7
1) anything rolled into a circle or ball, anything wound, rolled up,
folded together
2) a military cohort
2a) the tenth part of legion
2a1) about 600 men i.e. legionaries
2a2) if auxiliaries either 500 or 1000
2a3) a maniple, or the thirtieth part of a legion
2b) any band, company, or detachment, of soldiers

John 8:24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am [he], ye shall die in your sins.

John 8:28 Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am [he], and [that] I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.

John 9:9 Some said, This is he: others [said], He is like him: [but] he said, I am [he].

John 13:19 Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am [he].

And another two, the first pointed out to me by Lee Strobel.

Mark 6:50 For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid.

This is one of the places where the King James version unfortunately would seem to serve all of humanity poorly.

Prior context. Who is the "He" that Jesus is saying "I AM" about, from the Greek/English interlinear at the bottom?

Act 20:28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

Just thought this was interesting.
Doth that man love his Lord who would be willing to see Jesus wearing a crown of thorns, while for himself he craves a chaplet of laurel? Shall Jesus ascend to his throne by the cross, and do we expect to be carried there on the shoulders of applauding crowds? Charles H. Spurgeon
